Volunteer at the Language Institute

Why Volunteer?

Our mission is to welcome the world through caring relationships and English instruction … and we need your help!

The Language Institute offers in-person English classes during the day at UPC on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We occasionally offer online classes. We offer one-on-one tutoring both in person and online.

We have three eight-week quarters (fall, winter, and spring) that fall within UW’s quarter dates. We ask volunteers to commit to helping for one quarter at a time.  Volunteers are of course welcome to take vacations!  Vacations need to be arranged in advance.

Why volunteer with us?

  • Use (or develop) your teaching and cross-cultural skills
  • Make new friends from all around the world
  • Serve UPC’s international neighbors here in Seattle
Classroom Instructors

Classroom Instructors plan and teach classes (in person or online). They have overall responsibility for the class.

Classroom Assistants

Classroom Assistants assist classroom instructors. They may be asked to serve as a substitute if the instructor needs a week off. (This role is a great one to start with if you don’t have teaching/tutoring experience.)

Tutors

Tutors teach students one-on-one in weekly tutoring sessions (in person or online).

General Assistants

General Assistants help with letting students into the building, setting up the refreshments table, hosting events, and other needs as they arise.
