George came to UPC in 2008 already in love with the Pacific Northwest. Although his earliest childhood memories were of being covered in salt water, lashed to the high side of a sailboat, racing on San Francisco bay, his fondest memories come from summer camp sailing in the San Juan Islands. The best thing about George is his wife Ann, who has put up with him for over a quarter century. Together they’ve been raised by three wonderful children, Harvey, Will, and Phebe, who by now have done all they can and moved on to bigger things. George believes in grace. The apostle Paul considered himself ‘chief among sinners,’ but that’s just because he hadn’t met George. It’s been the presence and faithfulness of a gracious God that means the world to George and gives him hope for the world… “Christ in me is the hope of glory.” George is passionate about university students and community, followers of Jesus living kingdom life together. George has served with Cru in New England, as a chaplain at M.I.T., as pastor of discipleship at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in L.A. Although he’s a Husky wannabe, George makes do with a little schooling from Brown University and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. George loves to hang out in coffee shops with friends, reading or pretending to drink coffee (which he doesn’t), but you’ll see him just as often riding a bicycle on the Burke-Gilman trail. He loves fly-fishing, skiing, putzing in the garden, and any sport that allows him to win by trash talking.
I have been a pastor at UPC since 1982 and am full of stories of God’s activity here over the years. Since 1991 I have served as Executive Pastor. I love to empower and encourage leaders and staff as we try to share God’s generous love on our mission at UPC. My wife, Carroll, and I have two daughters and sons in law who live in Seattle as well. I love serving in the ministry of Side-by-Side, often as a barista, and talking with dads who are walking through the deep waters of a child with a critical illness. I also love to play tennis and travel and have done three house exchanges internationally.
Pastor of Equipping & Care
I’ve always had a heart for others and am passionate about helping people find freedom in Christ. I’ve had many roles in ministry over the years and am affectionately called both ‘word girl’ and ‘revdocmom’ by my daughters, Emma and Camille; being their mom is my favorite role in life. In addition to ministry within the church, I founded a retreat Center, Deep Well Ministries, which is designed to offer women a place to rest, renew, and invest in their spiritual development. Just think spa day + Jesus. If you miss my preaching or leading in worship on a Sunday you can likely track me down drinking coffee at Peet's, throwing a party at home, or at Pure Barre (it’s true, I’m a barre addict!).
Pastor of Global Ministries
Born in Korea, I came to the US at age four and was raised in the Bay Area. I attended U.C. Berkeley and Princeton Theological Seminary, after which I ministered at churches in California, New Jersey, Maryland, and Seoul, Korea before coming to Seattle. I'm a loyal fan of Bay Area teams: Cal Bears, San Francisco Forty-Niners and Giants, Oakland A’s, and Golden State Warriors. My hobbies include playing and watching sports (especially basketball), reading, and watching movies. I prefer birthday PIES over cakes.
