May 25th (Wednesday) 10:30 — Explore the Bloedel Reserve — Visit The Japanese Memorial Wall on Bainbridge Island

The spectacular 150-acre Bloedel Reserve has been described as a forest garden that was created by Virginia and Prentice Bloedel, under “the influence of the conservation movement and Asian philosophy.” The Reserve contains a lovely Japanese garden, lakes, lawns, woods, a stone garden, a moss garden, a rhododendron glen, and a reflection garden. The Bledel’s’ French Chateau-style home, including many original furnishings, is preserved as a visitor center. It takes about 2 hours to tour the gardens.

Next, we will visit The Memorial Wall which commemorates the 276 Japanese and Japanese Americans who were exiled from their Bainbridge Island homes under President Roosevelt’s Order during World War II. The memorial also celebrates the Island Community which defended its Japanese-American friends and neighbors, supported them while away, and welcomed them home again.
