Families

How can we help?

Getaways:

***Due to COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel Side-by-Side Winter Weekend, previously scheduled for February 19-21.

NOTE FOR FAMILIES: We invite qualifying families to attend two Side-by-Side Getaways: Camp Side-by-Side and/or Side-by-Side Winter Weekend. You may apply to participate in a third getaway, and we will consider you as part of the wait list and include you if space is available. We are doing our best to share these delightful experiences with as many families as possible--thank you for understanding!

Family Support:

For local and out-of-town families, we provide enthusiastic screened and trained volunteer teams of two to spend time with children (patient and/or siblings) once per week on Zoom or FaceTime. If your kids could use a fun playmate (and you could use a break), we’d love to connect with you!

We are also providing relational support for parents and caregivers during this time of "double isolation" created by pediatric illness and COVID-19.

Typically, the Family Support program includes weekly in-person connections between kids and volunteers--we are excited to return to face-to-face interactions when we are able!

Activities

For families receiving support for a patient and or sibling(s), your volunteer team will customize activities depending on the age, interests, health, and energy levels of your child(ren). This may include:
• Playing board games (virtually) or reading stories
• Making video projects together
• Crafts (our volunteers will deliver supplies!)
• Playing online games
• Telling jokes, making up fairy tales, and more!
Activities carry no cost for families or volunteers. Volunteers can provide support to local and non-local families through the duration of treatment.

For parents and caregivers receiving support, Side-by-Side Side-by-Side offers seasoned volunteers (an individual or a couple) to come alongside and share relational support via weekly conversation on Zoom, FaceTime, or a phone call.

Safety

• Volunteers are screened by our staff and trained with support from Seattle Children’s and the Ronald McDonald House.
• Volunteers follow the buddy system--there will always be two volunteers on the call with your child!
• Volunteers will maintain close communication and will follow your lead regarding special concerns.
