Side-by-Side for Volunteers

Camp Side-by-Side

Registration for Camp 2012 is open! Volunteers attend Camp August 4–10, 2012 and must commit to the entire week.

Camp Side-by-Side is a classic summer experience designed for families who have a child with cancer. Volunteers come in droves to build friendships, community and FUN: exactly what makes Camp Side-by-Side so memorable.

Essential characteristics for volunteers at Camp Side-by-Side:
  • Unflagging enthusiasm and energy
  • Patience and stamina for whatever the day holds
  • Flexibility and willingness to serve in a variety of capacities
  • Mobility and strength for the physical and interactive parts of camp life.

Last year, one volunteer said, "I saw God's love clearly working at Camp Side-by-Side in the relationships at camp—from Tully's Cart conversations to joyful rocket launching to stewards serving at the parent dinner. The best way to describe Camp is, 'The church has left the building!' Camp Side-by-Side is a service miracle!"

Ronald McDonald House Partnership

Every Monday afternoon, Side-by-Side volunteers trek to Seattle's Ronald McDonald House for a variety of activities with kids and families. Whether it's cooking dinner for 80, practicing flash cards at Four O'Clock Fun, or getting artsy with the Art Cart, we love to support the incredible work of Ronald McDonald House Seattle.

Application to volunteer with Side-by-Side at the Ronald McDonald House

Please note that dinner teams serve on Monday evenings and require a monthly commitment. Groups serve from 3:30pm until 7:00pm (or until the kitchen sparkles)!

Family Support Program

Family Support is Side-by-Side's year-round, relational response to needs of families in Seattle for the treatment of serious illness. We match our screened, trained and supported volunteer teams to families who are referred by social workers and staff from Seattle Children's Hospital, the Hutch School and other local organizations. Volunteers provide support to assigned families while patients are in active treatment in Seattle—which can last anywhere from 3 months to a year or longer.
We welcome new applicants and train volunteers year-round.
