About Outreach Ministries
What We Believe
The mission of University Presbyterian Church's urban and global ministries is to glorify God by:
- inspiring University Presbyterian Church members and friends to grow as Christ’s disciples through cross-cultural witness, and through ministry in relationship with the poor and disenfranchised.
- facilitating and supporting mission service that connects people to their discipleship call and provides training and preparation that promotes their effective service according to the terms of the missions position/ministry partner.
- mobilizing and stewarding University Presbyterian Church’s human and financial resources for significant and strategic Kingdom impact.
Two Key Distinctives of urban and global ministries at University Presbyterian Church:
- We are primarily a discipleship movement: People’s participation in missions at University Presbyterian Church is an integral aspect of their discipleship journey.
- We are a substantial strategic missions organization: We are a sophisticated multi-staffed, multi-programmed, $1.5 million-dollar-a-year complex organization.
Core Missiological Values and Principles Statement
Evangelism and Social Action
We hold them in equal weight and are biased toward those ministries and missions efforts where the two values are mutually integral.
Unreached Peoples
We value missions efforts that create Christian presence and witness in places and among peoples where there is no gospel witness or church community in its context (including among peoples who are culturally distant, but geographically near).
Indigenous Leadership, Indigenous Mission Movements & Indigenous Partnerships
We recognize the strategic leadership of specific national leaders and the effectiveness of their missions efforts; therefore we seek to honor their leadership and serve with them according to the terms that they establish in supporting specific indigenous missions efforts and creating reciprocal partnerships with mature indigenous leaders working in their context.
Partnerships in Sustainable Community Development
We value missions efforts that not only foster personal redemption in people’s lives, but also social transformation of individuals and communities and seek to work with community development efforts that create Christian presence while working toward sustainable community well-being.
Missions Bias Toward the Marginalized & the Vulnerable
As biblical Christians we seek to engage in missions in accord with the biblical imperative toward the poor and disenfranchised.
The City as a Context of Common Grace
We value the city as a God-designed context of refuge and grace and seek to work with God in the city to renew and restore it to its intended design.
Risk & Sacrifice
We acknowledge and commend the values of risk and sacrifice, which challenges the seven last words of the church—"we've never done it that way before"—and that prescribes the terms of costly discipleship.
