Deacon Ministries at University Presbyterian Church

What Is a Deacon?

Acts 6 tells us that the office of deacon was formed when the apostles were struggling to meet the needs of widows. People were beginning to fall through the cracks, just as some do today, so the apostles set aside certain members of the body to watch our for the needs of the people. Thus came the commissioning of the first deacons.

The qualification for being a deacon was that one was "full of the Spirit and wisdom." It says in 1 Timothy 3:8-10 that deacons are worthy of respect, sincere, and honest: "They keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience."
