A Message from George Hinman

By now, you have likely heard that Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Earl F. Palmer, went to be with Jesus early Tuesday morning. He died peacefully and, in these last days, has been surrounded by his loving family and the words and stories from friends.

Earl gave witness to Jesus at UPC first as a youth pastor from 1956–1964, and then he returned as Senior Pastor from 1991– 2008. He opened our minds to the theological themes from the likes of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Victor Hugo. Many will remember Earl’s winsome ability to connect with people of all ages and stages of faith. We were privileged to hear him one last time on January 1, 2023, in our worship service.

We won’t forget his pearls of wisdom, poetry, and writings. “I know a House that took me in to send me out.” We are kites with cords anchored to Jesus, learning to trust God as we put our weight on the downhill ski and to encourage and build one another up in Christian faith and love.

I join you in mourning the loss of this dear friend, mentor, and teacher. Early in my own career, while in Boston, Ann and I listened to Earl’s sermons on cassette tapes and know the impact he had on so many in Seattle (and beyond!) Join me in praying for Shirley and family as they grieve. We’ll post details of his service as they are known.

With love,

George

Update April 25, 2023

Earl F. Palmer (November 26, 1931 – April 25, 2023)

Today we say an earthly goodbye to a pastor and friend of so many. University Presbyterian Church in Seattle was one of many places fortunate to benefit from the ministry and teaching of Rev. Earl Palmer. Like putting our weight on the downward ski, you taught us to trust in the trustworthiness of Jesus Christ.

We ask our members and family to include Shirley and the Palmer family in your prayers this week. Check back for information on a celebration of life service at upc.org/memorials.
