The Solid Rock Memorial Garden Project will refurbish the overgrown garden on the northeast corner of 47th and 16th NE to complement the landscaping of Shasta House across the street. It will provide an attractive and secure new space for community fellowship and respite, while celebrating our hope of the Resurrection and providing a secure place for interment of ashes and memorial to UPCers.
Several years ago, Session approved a project to renovate UPC’s garden courtyard at the corner of 47th Ave and 16th Ave NE. In addition to renovating a space that is currently underused, unsafe and unattractive, this garden will include spaces where ashes can be safely interred—the community of saints awaiting the resurrection of the body. There will also be spaces for plaques to remember UPC-ers who have gone before us but who may interred elsewhere.
This new space—the Solid Rock Garden—will provide a beautiful and secure new space for our UPC community to gather, rest, fellowship, and remember. Here is the current design:
The Solid Rock sculpture is the gray space in the center. The columbarium is the dark rectangle
at the bottom of the design, next to the entry to Larson Hall. The lych gate entrance remains in
the upper right corner. New steps to the sidewalk on 47th provide another direct entrance and
open the garden to a new view to Shasta House across the street. Comfortable single seat
rockery will adjoin the bedding around the perimeter.
Here is a rendering of what the columbarium will look like:
+ Funds raised through April 2017: approximately $120,000
